What is Islam?

Islam is a faith followed by nearly two billion people around the world. The word “Islam” means peace and willing submission to God (Allah). A person who follows Islam is called a Muslim.

Core beliefs

Muslims believe in one God, in His prophets — including Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them) — in the scriptures revealed to them, in the angels, in the Day of Judgment, and in divine wisdom. The Quran is understood to be the word of God, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (the Sunnah) guides daily life.

The five pillars

1

Shahada — Faith

Bearing witness that there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is His messenger.

2

Salah — Prayer

Praying five times a day, keeping a living connection with God.

3

Zakat — Charity

Giving a set share of one's wealth to those in need.

4

Sawm — Fasting

Fasting during the month of Ramadan as an act of devotion and self-discipline.

5

Hajj — Pilgrimage

Making the pilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetime for those who are able.

Values we share

At its heart, Islam calls for compassion, honesty, justice, care for family and neighbors, generosity to the poor, and the pursuit of knowledge. These are the values that guide the work of our center.
